3.3 magnitude earthquake reported in Central Illinois

At least 80 people said they felt the earthquake, which was reported at 11:43 p.m. Monday in the village of Lerna in Coles County, officials confirmed.

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake was confirmed in Central Illinois late Monday.

The earthquake, which was nearly 9.6 kilometers in depth, was reported at 11:43 p.m. Monday about 4 miles north-northeast of the village of Lerna in Coles County, according to the United States Geological Survey.

At least 80 people reported weak or light shaking, including at least one person about 153 miles away in Crest Hill, according to geological survey reports. The quake was also felt in Mount Vernon, Montrose, Toledo, Ashmore and Urbana.

Lerna, which had a population of less than 300 in 2020, is about 190 miles southwest of Chicago.

No injuries or damages were reported.

In July 2024, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake was reported in DeKalb County.
