Bruce Springsteen has shared another previously unreleased song from his upcoming collection of lost albums.
Blind Spot is the first song to be shared from 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions', one of seven previously-shelved records to be released as part of the 'Tracks II: The Lost Albums' box set, out on June 27. Head here for more details on the collection.
Comprising 10 songs, 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions' was previously known among fans as Springsteen's "loops record". It was written following the release of its 1994 Oscar-winning title track and was influenced by West Coast hip hop, which inspired Springsteen to experiment with drum samples and create his own original "loops" with engineer Toby Scott.
A slow-burning, atmospheric ballad, Blind Spot serves up a similar sombre tone to Streets Of Philadelphia, offering deep, emotional lyrics that tackle doubt and betrayal. Springsteen explained:
"That was just the theme that I locked in on at that moment. I don’t really know why. Patti and I, we were having a great time in California. But sometimes if you lock into one song you like, then you follow that thread. I had Blind Spot, and I followed that thread through the rest of the record."
Although slated for a release in spring 1995, 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions' was shelved by Springsteen after he decided to reunite with The E Street Band for the first time in seven years.
"I said, ‘Well, maybe it’s time to just do something with the band, or remind the fans of the band or that part of my work life,'" Springsteen recalled. "So that’s where we went. But I always really liked 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions'...during the Broadway show, I thought of putting it out [as a standalone release]. I always put them away, but I don’t throw them away."
Alongside the announcement of 'Tracks II: The Lost Albums' earlier this month, Springsteen released Rain In The River, from the 'Perfect World' LP in the collection.
Springsteen and The E Street Band will return to Europe this spring, and play three dates at Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena and two shows at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium between May 14 and June 7. Tickets are on sale now.
