Ryanair has announced a new flight route from Glasgow Airport to one of the 'sunniest places in Europe'. This Mediterranean island, known for its golden beaches and historic capital, is an attractive destination throughout the year.
The first flights on this budget airline route are set to depart today (April 4), taking passengers from Glasgow to Malta in just under four hours. The flights will land at Malta International Airport, located just outside the capital city of Valletta.
Ryanair plans to operate this service twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with bookings currently open until October 2025. April can be a fantastic time to explore Malta, with temperatures ranging between 12c and 20c.
However, the peak tourist season is in July and August when temperatures often soar into the low 30s. Many travellers recommend visiting in September and October for a more relaxed experience, with fewer tourists and pleasant highs of 25-28c.
Malta's central position in the Mediterranean Sea makes it one of the sunniest spots in Europe, boasting an average of 2,957 sunshine hours a year. Its capital, Valletta, holds the distinction of being Europe's hottest capital city, offering mild weather and five to six hours of daily sunshine even during winter months.
Once you've touched down in Malta, you'll find a wealth of activities to enjoy. Golden Bay, located in the north, is one of the island's most popular beaches, boasting soft sands and crystal-clear waters perfect for a swim. It's a lively location during the summer months, with sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts aplenty.
Paradise Bay offers another idyllic setting for soaking up the sun and swimming in turquoise waters. For a more tranquil experience, consider visiting Gnejna Bay on the west coast, a spot that's a favourite with locals.

Alternatively, take a short ferry ride to the neighbouring island of Gozo. With fares starting from just €7.50 (around £6.35) each way, it's a quieter destination than Malta, featuring less crowded beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Boat trips take less than 45 minutes.
Malta's capital, Valletta, often likened to an 'open air museum', is a must-visit for its stunningly preserved historical architecture. The cityscape is adorned with grand Baroque structures, ranging from churches to palaces, and its cobbled streets are lined with a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
While Malta may not be renowned as a party hotspot, there are certain areas that offer a vibrant nightlife. Paceville in St Julian's in the northwest of the island, is home to numerous bars, nightclubs, and even casinos.
The heart of the action can be found along St George's Road, a lively strip brimming with nightclubs that stay open until 4am at weekends.
Jade Kirwan, Ryanair's Comms Director, has announced the launch of the new route with enthusiasm: "Ryanair is pleased to see the first flights of our new Summer 2025 routes from Malta to Glasgow and Rzeszów take-off today (Wed, 2 Apr), carrying lots of happy holidaymakers and marking the beginning of the Summer 2025 season."
He further highlighted the frequency and affordability of the new service: "This exciting new Summer 2025 route will operate 2 times per week, offering our Maltese customers even more choice at the lowest fares when booking their summer getaways."
