The Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Daler Juma, stated that the country's hydropower potential exceeds 500 billion kWh per year, of which only 4% is currently being utilized.
He emphasized that Tajikistan is focused on fully harnessing this potential, including the completion of the Roghun hydropower plant with a capacity of 3,780 MW.
Tajik minister’s statement was made at the 66th meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council, held in Kazan, Russia on April 2 as part of the International Forum "EnergoProm."
Representatives from the energy ministries of CIS member nations participated in the meeting, where they discussed key issues and projects in the electricity sector.
One of the key moments was the presentation of the Strategy for the Development of the Electric Power Industry of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2050 prepared by the Minister of Energy of Russia, Sergey Tsivilyov. The strategy for the development of the fuel and energy complex of CIS countries for period up to 2035 was also discussed.
Special attention was given to initiatives and projects aimed at expanding cooperation in the electric power sector, including the development of interstate energy networks.
In his speech, Mr. Juma emphasized the importance of Tajikistan's participation in these projects, including the completion of the Datka-Sughd power transmission line. This 500 kW power transmission line, which was commissioned on March 31, 2025, will strengthen the energy connection between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The Tajik minister also noted that the continued construction of the Roghun hydropower plant and other hydropower projects will contribute to the development of the region's energy infrastructure and enhance the energy security of CIS countries.
The meeting also discussed preparations for the next session, which will take place in Dushanbe and will address issues related to the development strategy for the fuel and energy complex of CIS countries until 2035.
Sergey Tsivilyov, the President of the Council, emphasized the importance of coordinating the efforts of the Commonwealth countries and confirmed the intention to continue cooperation within the framework of joint energy projects.
"The next meeting will be held in Dushanbe, where we will consider issues related to preparing the Strategy for the Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the CIS for the period up to 2035," he added.
According to experts, the meeting in Kazan was an important step toward strengthening energy cooperation in the post-Soviet space, opening new horizons for united efforts in the energy sector and sustainable development of CIS countries.
Established in 1992, the CIS Electric Power Council consists of the heads of the relevant state authorities and national electricity companies of the participating states, which are vested with the respective powers by the states. The Council aims to joint and coordinated actions in the field of energy of CIS member nations, energy systems parallel work, as well stable and reliable electricity supply in CIS member nations.
