Research from vehicle finance specialists Moneybarn found that millions of motorists are paying out whopping fees just to make it to work.

Commuters in Glasgow, Scotland came off worst outside London, with eight hours of parking at Central station setting them back £24.95.

That was a dubious honour shared jointly with Moorfields in Liverpool, which charged the same rate.

Leeds station rounded out the top three at £22.50, narrowly edging out Reading and Sheffield, which shared fourth place at £22 apiece.

Scotland received some unfavourable representation, with both list-topping Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley making the top 10.

And northern England also came off poorly, with stations in Yorkshire, Northamptonshire, and Liverpool all featuring.

However, the most expensive city was, of course, London, with prices being so high that it was put in its own category by the research team.

No fewer than four stations in the capital - St Pancras, Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo, charged more than Glasgow Central, while a fifth (West Croydon) was only a couple of pounds less a day.

St Pancras was found to be the nation's most expensive overall, with eight hours of parking costing £32.50.

This would put it third on the overall European list, behind only Zurich HB in Switzerland (£39.46) and Paris' Gare Du Nord (£34.46).

A further three stations in the capital would also make that top 10, knocking off stations in Vienna, Rome and Berlin.

However, despite London's high prices, some of the surrounding areas actually made it onto the list of the cheapest station parking spots in the country.

Maidenhead, Berkshire, topped that set with charges of just £5.40 for the day, while Luton, Bedfordshire only cost £7.

Oxford was also a bargain at the same rate, while Tonbridge in Kent was only £8.30 - all of which are with a 75-minute train journey from London.
