The International Olympic Committee says it is disappointed with the outcome of the referendum rejecting a bid by Innsbruck-Tyrol for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
A spokesman said that the IOC would have liked to continue its preliminary exploratory talks with Innsbruck.
The spokesman said: “The IOC will continue exploratory talks with interested National Olympic Committees and venues from Asia, Europe and the U.S.
“We are certain that an excellent host city for the Olympic Winter Games 2026 will emerge from this process.
“The IOC hopes the talks will enable it to better explain a more streamlined bidding process and cost-effective games.”
The Tyrol bid was rejected by just over 53 per cent of those who voted on October 15.
In Innsbruck itself, a resounding 67.41 per cent of those who took part voted “no”.
Report says it is the latest referendum rejection of the Olympics by a potential European venue.
Innsbruck had been hoping to host the Winter Games for a third time, following 1964 and 1976.
However, the IOC is scheduled to decide on the host venue for the 2026 Games in October, 2019.
Meanwhile, several venues have expressed an interest, including Sion in Switzerland, Calgary in Canada and Stockholm.
Other possible contenders include: Stockholm, Milan, Sapporo in Japan, Erzurum in Turkey and Almaty in Kazakhstan, while it is thought the US could also be mulling a bid.
